Pretty Pumpkins.

Hey there...extra long time no see. Once again, I've let a couple months pass without a single blog post. With the changing of the season, we have kept ourselves extremely busy here at Butter Toast. Autumn is treating us very well...but spare time has seemed to all but disappear. With that said, I want to apologize for the absence. I would normally now promise to post more regularly, but as we've come to find out, I can't always keep my blogging promises. So let's just get onto the pretty pumpkins!!

I say forget traditional pumpkin carving...I'm adopting pumpkin flowers and pumpkin painting! I love all these cute ideas I've come across on Pintrest. We have a load of pumpkins outside of Butter Toast right now...I really hope I can find the time to paint at least a couple of them this season. The upside of not carving?...They'll look cute well past Halloween!

Well, well, well...I've been absent (yet again) for two full weeks. Oh how I wish as life gets busier, the hours in the day would somehow get longer...Le sigh. Yarn Bombing Love.

Happy Friday to you! I saw a great post on Yarn Bombing today via Apartment Therapy, and I immediately wanted to collect more images and make a post about it as well. (big, fat copycat..i know) It feels like forever since I've had time to pick up my crochet needles and yarn to just create. I love how busy the shop (and my personal life) have been lately, but it sure doesn't lend for much leisurely craft time. I should really set aside some time for crochet-therapy in the near future.

Look of the Day: Unexpected Cut-Outs.

Hey everyone! Angela here. Hope everyone is having a terrific thursday and staying out of the heat (I know I am avoiding the outdoors like the plague). Last week I decided to step outside the box and wear something I usually stray from: the color brown. For some odd reason I just never wear brown. I do love coral and turquoise, so I think that helped to offset my brown psychological barrier when I was buying this dress. However, what really sold me on this dress was the back! I absolutely love when a shirt or dress has an unexpected cut-out. It adds so much to the piece!

Look of the Day: Sheer Layers.

Hey there! Happy Friday to you! I'm back with another outfit post (already)! I've been dying to wear this gorgeous embroidered sheer cardigan-thingy since we discovered it hiding in back-stock recently. So yesterday, I went for it. I had envisioned dark skinny jeans with it, and thought either a skin-tight tank, or a loose/flowy tank would pair well. Clearly, I went with a flowy tank, and my new fave chunky wedges. I love, love, love the subtle feminine details...like the pretty pleats on the blouse, and scalloped edges of the cardigan.

This may seem like a lot of layers for the dead of Phoenix summer, but the open/flowy fabrics helped a lot. And, you wouldn't believe it, but these skin-tight black pants are super breathable and bearable for summer. I think they will become a staple for those "I-don't-feel-like-shaving" days.

Look of the Day: Plaid Mini Shorts.

So, I'm a little late to post this look, but since I got a chance to snap a few photos, I figure, eh, why not? I wore this look last Friday (but have since been too busy to blog). The vintage blouse and shorts were both altered from their original state for a fresh look. We removed the sleeves from the blouse to highlight the pretty embroidered neckline, (the open/loose arm holes make wearing a black blouse in Phoenix actually bearable). We also hemmed up the shorts about 6" to summer-them-up a bit. Overall, this look is a bit dark for summer, but I was aching to wear those shorts, I couldn't help myself!!

Drooling Over Denim.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Jasmine and I (Angela) were on the hunt over the weekend searching for amazing vintage denim. My main project this summer as an intern for Butter Toast is to create and design a photo shoot, which I am extremely excited about (who wouldn't be?). My vision: denim on denim, with a side of denim.

We have lots of denim scraps at the store (from cutting pants into shorts and what not), and thought we should create some denim accessories for the shoot. Here are some of our ideas:

Meet Angela, Our Summer Intern.

I'm really excited to finally introduce Butter Toast's summer intern.. Miss Angela Williamson.

Angela is a college student at the University of Arizona and will be interning with us over the summer. We couldn't be more excited about it! Angela was an athlete growing up, and started developing her interest in fashion as she started college. She is especially interested in sustainable fashion, and the recycling aspects associated with vintage clothing. She likes mixing new pieces with secondhand or vintage garments to create a unique style of her own. Although, she has not fully decided her academic path, she is passionate about fashion and creating something of her own. I'm fully confident she will find her niche in the fashion world. We were so honored and excited that she chose Butter Toast as a starting point in her fashion adventures. She is already super helpful, and has great ideas to share. This summer is sure to be a great one!! Stay tuned for guest posts on the blog from Angela over the next few weeks/months.

Lack of Presence.

Holy smokes! It's been quite some time since I've blogged, hasn't it? Although I feel guilty for my lack of blogging, there is an upside... It's been crazy busy around these parts, and Butter Toast's business is doing better than ever! We've been overwhelmed with work, but we've been loving every second of it. We recently took on a couple interns for the summer-- so exciting!! You can expect to learn more about them and their experience with us on the blog over the next few weeks/months. You can also expect a lot more activity on the blog this summer...as AZ heats up (or boils over), I plan on soaking up the A/C indoors while focusing on online endeavors. With the help of an intern all summer, we have projects and goals galore ahead of us, all of which I hope to document on the blog. There is so much to look forward to this summer...I can't wait!

Look of the Day: Funky First Friday.

I had a bit too much fun this past First Friday, hence, the delay on the outfit post. Guess what I wore? Yep, another obnoxious maxi dress!! I can't get enough of them, they are just so easy to wear. My mister said I looked like a cute traffic cone, teehee <33. I'd have to agree.

A Lovely Wedding.

The wedding I attended on Saturday was absolutely delightful! I love Sedona, it's incredible there, and a grand location for a wedding. I got teary-eyed, drank some red wine, and danced my ass off with my 6-year-old 2nd cousin, Sydney, all night. It was great!

Crafty fun, soon to come.

I'm starting preparations for a new project Jasmine and I want to create to liven up the shop for spring...fabric bunting! Josh over at GrowOp next door created an uh-mazing little display of plaid bunting above their patio and entryway, and we instantly fell in love! It has so much charm!! (Remind me to share a photo soon) We want to add our own twist, so we are going to use vintage floral fabrics, a scalloped shape, and I'm crocheting the line to string the flags on (instead of using bias tape). I'm so excited!! I can't wait to get crafty again. March has been too busy to even think straight, but I feel some creative energy coming on!! These are a few images I gathered for inspiration...

Art Detour 23

Well hello. Long time, no blog...again. March has been busy busy!! I just wanted to quickly share a few photos I got on my phone from this past weekend, Art Detour 23. I wish I got more, I feel so bad because I wasn't able to take photos of each booth, as other things were stealing my attention.

Overall, it was a really fun weekend, I got to meet so many new amazing people and develop several new friendships! I want to thank all of our vendors for a lovely weekend!! I highly recommend checking out Brandi's blog and Kat's blog. I've followed these ladies' blogs for several months now, it was first time meeting them in person, and they are so, so great! Dino Land.

My boyfriend's family had some unfortunate happenings this weekend when their fully reliable SUV decided to poop out on them about an hour east of the AZ border. What a way to start spring break, huh?!? So they were stuck in Gallup, NM and my mom came up with the brilliant idea to use her truck and tow them to AZ where the rest of the fam is, and plenty of auto repair places nearby. It was such a good idea, and it worked out perfect. Babe and I weren't working on Sunday so we got up bright and early to save the day!

One of my favorite parts of to drive to New Mexico is traveling through Holbrook, AZ. Why, you ask? Because its FULL of Dinosaurs! It's kind of like traveling through the Twilight Zone or something...there are dinosaur statues everywhere-- big and small, every color of the rainbow. These are a few shots of our stop in Holbrook. Enjoy the Dino goodess!!

Look of the Day: Salmon, Tulips, and Pleats.

Well, well..I didn't think I'd be able to do another outfit post until next week when Ashley and I work together again. But alas, my sweet, sweet mother came to visit me today at the shop, so I had her snap a few pics. Today I wore a fairly new blouse that has quickly become a favorite of mine, the details are so cute--pleated tulip sleeves, peter-pan pleated neckline (not shown), and a pretty little tie-ascot! Long time, no blog.

Well hello. I've missed you. It has been quite the busy couple of weeks!! I have so much I've been wanting to share, but no time to blog!! I have, however, tried to jump back on the twitter train...so if you'd like to keep up with mini tidbits of my happenings, follow us on Twitter!

I'm going to make my updates short and sweet for now, then over the next couple days, I will elaborate on the good stuff :)

Lots of new flowers at the shop thanks to my awesome mom, more photos soon.

And last, but certainly not least, our gypsy/bohemian photoshoot was a total success. It was a killer 13+ hour day, but we got some incredible shots! We are so excited to see the final images! I want to thank all of our models (Justine, Raechel, Stephenie, Maggie, Matt, Austin, and Brad) as well as miss Angela Simpson, our lovely photographer and Darci and Melissa, our beauty team. Plus an extra special thanks to Ashley of Merry May Handmade for always being there to help us out! I took some really great photos on my phone but I'm hesitant to post any yet because we are submitting them to a few publications. In which case we won't be able to share them until the publication hits stands.

So, more on that later...

Dear March: Bring it On.

So I've sort of had the day off today... I say sort of because my home duties were out of control, the day has been full of cleaning, closet organizing, and endless laundry.
[[pauses b/c the next load of laundry is dry, must fold and continue...]]

We have so, so much coming up this next month, holy moly, it's crazy. I'm really thankful to have had today to catch up on household duties. We (meaning the mister and I) should be good on laundry for a bit (hopefully, please-oh-please), my closet is getting so jammed packed after spending some time hanging up tried-on-but-didn't-work items, as well as the 5+ loads of laundry done today. Whew! I need to get rid on of some clothes, but that is a-whole-nother project.

So, like I said, it's going to be a BIG month. First up, First Friday in March! Yah, this coming Friday--crazy. We have a little "6th Street" Meeting tonight where we will be finalizing some music/vendor things (more on that later). Practically right after First Friday, on Sunday March 6th, we have a whimsical, gypsy-themed editorial shoot set up with our friend and beloved photographer, miss Angela Simpson. It's going to be an all-day event 5am-7pm, but boy-oh-boy do we have some fantastic things planned for it! Alrighty, fast forward two weeks from the shoot to March 19th-20th... ART DETOUR!! Again, we are teaming up with our friends on 6th Street to hopefully bring a really fun/memorable weekend (full of shop sales, live music, and local artists) for our friends and fans! (Again, more details about that coming in the next few weeks..)

Wait, there's more. Saturday, March 26th, we are going to be a part of AZ Blogger Meetup!! I recently had the chance to chat with Chelsea about the event, it sounds like it's going to be so, so much fun! There are some really great ladies hosting the event..

Time to get ready for some long days and nights this March...I'm actually really looking forward to it all!! It's going to be a great month to be creative and network with all sorts of new folks!! Can't wait!!

Longing for Spring.

As I'm sure you are all well aware...Spring is just around the corner!! Some days already feel like Spring in Phoenix, but weather is about to take a rainy turn this weekend, and that fact is making me long for Spring even more. If you read my "7 Facts" post, you found out that my very favorite smell ever is the fresh scent of orange blossoms in the Spring. It makes me melt. I've had this image on our shop computer for some time and I stumbled upon it today... it just took me into full on daydream mode. I want to be here, with my honey and some friends, enjoying some drinks, eats, and a beautiful afternoon, while breathing that sweet, sweet smell of orange blossoms. It would be complete and utter BLISS!

Butter Toast on the Big Screen.

Hey there! I have some great/surreal news!

It was recently brought to our attention, that a vintage suit purchase from our old shop [[Billie Goat Vintage]] is worn by Dakota Johnson in a new (not yet released) independent motion picture entitled, "Theo". The news was sooo exciting!! I'm still kind of in shock.

I can't wait until it comes out, it looks pretty funny! Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time finding out more information about it, I think because it may still be in production, or post editing, or what have you. I'm going to keep an eye on it, and share later!

I feel like such a novice blogger, so it really means a lot that she thought of me for this. To be honest, this lady is one of the biggest reasons I'm still giving this blogging thing a chance. When I started, I was getting really discouraged by the lack of followers and interest generated from the blog. I believe she was the first reader to actually comment on a post, and when I saw it, I was so appreciative that someone out there was reading and enjoying. So, Kat, thanks a million! <3

7 Facts About Lil' Ol' Me:

(This is actually so much harder than expected, I'm kind of boring now that I think about it..)

1. It makes me sick to my stomach to witness someone straight-up drinking a glass of milk. Eww I'm almost gagging just thinking about it.

2. I make up words all the time that I think are real words. And I'll probably disagree with the person who corrected me until it's proven via the dictionary. Then I might be mad at the person who corrected me for a few minutes.

3. I need at least one cheeseburger, and one mexican meal every single week.

4. One of my very favorite smells ever, is the scent of orange blossoms, in the east Mesa orange groves in the Springtime. It's pretty much the only thing that I miss about growing up/living in Mesa.

5. I'll have a Disney sing-a-long with you anyday, anytime.

6. I have major sewing machine fright. And I really hope I can get over it someday so I don't have to burden my best friend with all my repairs and alterations.

7. I'm currently at the happiest point of my life that I ever have been. I'm learning more about myself and what actually matters in life everyday, and becoming a better me because of it. (A special thanks goes out to my love, Brad, for that one!)

In the Mood for Love.

Hello! And happy, happy Friday to you! I have no idea why, but the great film maker, Wan Kar Wai, has been on my mind today. His imagery is so intriguing and colorful. His scoring is dramatic, yet beautiful. And he knows how to make a really good love story. If you like foreign films, I highly suggest checking out his film series ""Days of being Wild", "In the Mood for Love", and "2046". The films were released over the course of 13 years creating an informal love trilogy. They would be great Valentine movies for you and your sweetie to enjoy over the weekend. I pulled a few lovely stills from the films for your viewing pleasure.

I know that you can stream "In the Mood for Love" via Netflix because it's in my queue right now, the others are sometimes a bit harder to find, but well worth the search.

On another note:

My mister and I decided that we would start a lunch date tradition on my Saturdays off, and tomorrow happens to be one of those Saturdays, so I'm getting pretty excited. One of my favorite customers, Elisa, works at a cafe called The Main Ingredient down the street from us, and I've been meaning to go forever. Tomorrow is a perfect excuse. Birthday Update//(Way Overdue).

Hello! Man, oh man, this post was suppose to come a lot sooner! My Birthday happened to coincide with a very busy couple of weeks! I feel a little silly posting this since it's so far after the fact now, but I wanted to share a few photos and the gifts my friends spoiled me with.

I had a truly magical birthday. I wasn't expecting such amazing gifts, I'm so grateful to have amazing people surrounding me to make me feel special. First of all, I came home to a sparkling clean house thanks to my lovely mom!! (What would I do with out her?) That evening a few friends and I started with drinks at my place then had a lovely sushi dinner around the corner from my house at Moira. Babe and I spent the rest of the night cuddling, woke up and had the most delightful brunch at Coronado Cafe. The weather was beautiful, the benedicts were phenomenal, and the drinks were cheap and lovely too!! The rest of the weekend was spent enjoying the gorgeous weather and relaxing. It was so perfect. Thank you to all my friends and family who helped make it such a special birthday!

I'm going to get back on track with blogging soon. I promise :)

Well hello. It's been awhile, hasn't it? Besides being busy at work, I've been in project-mode, so I've gotten a bit behind on blogging. Which is probably a good thing, since I spend a lot of time daydreaming of the projects I want to do, and not so much time actually doing them. I have a few posts up my sleeve about what the mister and I worked on this weekend, but since they aren't fully complete yet, I'm going to save them.

Our First Instax Photo.

Well hello! Last weekend I ordered myself an Instax as an early birthday present, and it arrived in the mail yesterday!! It was quite an exciting moment for me since I've been wanting one for, like, ever. Well, at least since I discovered Polaroid film was no longer being made (a year after the fact), right after I picked up a cute retro Polaroid cam from my friend Ashley's garage sale. I had the choice of ordering Polaroid-compatible film from a Norwegian company and pay outrageous shipping, or save up for an Instax, and be able to get film locally. Since film is the most important part of an instant camera, I figured Instax was the way to go. I wanted to make my very first Instax photo one of the mister and I, the first of many Instax memories to come. Here it is!!

My face got kinda whited out, and in hindsight I wish I wasn't so scrubby for our first Instax photo, but oh well. Man-o-man I can't wait for our future Instax memories!! I got 10 packs of film when I ordered, so hopefully that'll last me a bit.

Kaylah at The Dainty Squid started a great Instax project. I think I may join in on the fun.

Hello! I hope everyone had a lovely weekend! It was certainly a fun and eventful weekend for Butter Toast and myself. First Friday was a fantastic night at the shop, and Ashley's birthday outing last night was a total blast. Today, I'm exhausted (okay, and a bit hungover). My mister and I have had a lovely relaxing Sunday. Vegging out, catching up on Netflix, and loving each other. It's so nice to relax after such a busy week. Oh, and cute alert-- I mentioned I was craving a chicken ceasar salad, and the babe just ran to the grocery store to get stuff to make me one. Ah, what a lovely day!

Color Wheel.

After reading Ashley's post about hair styling/color yesterday, I very much missed the fun I used to have with my hair. Back then, I had some friends in Beauty School so it was super easy/affordable to change my hair every few months. As of late, my hair is pretty au-natural, my busy schedule hardly allows for much personal beauty time. Honestly, I'm lucky if can get my hair done more than once a year.....But my Birthday is coming up at the end of the month, and I certainly plan on pampering myself a bit when that time comes. Take a look at my hair in transition over the past few years:

I don't know what prompted it, but my first obsession of the year is retro paper dolls!! I don't have a collection of my own yet, but I hope to change that this year. I dream of a day that I have little beebs of my own to play paper dolls with :)

New Years Eve Eve.

Hey there. Merry New Years Eve Eve. I can't believe 2010 is almost over. I wish I was in a more goal oriented mood today...but I'm in an awful funk. I don't know what prompted it, but I'm feeling more self-conscious than ever, and it's freezing 'round these parts lately... so that doesn't help. The wind is absolutely nuts downtown right now, I can hear it howling all around the shop right now. Being an AZ native, I can't handle the cold very well...I'm a total baby about it. Blah.

Ok, enough about my negativity. In hopes to change my bummy mood, I've been gazing at lovelies online a bit today. A few things I've fallen in love with:

New Loves v.12

'Ello. I'm back for New Loves Tuesday. (Sorry I missed last week). I apologize in advance, for this will be a quickie, but with the holidays I haven't had much time for creative research.

I, of course, found this artist on Etsy. Her name is Eva Juliet, an art director and graphic designer from Quebec, a French province of Canada. My dear late grandma (mentioned yesterday) was born and raised in Quebec, so I thought that little detail was worth adding. Eva Juliet incorporates positive messages into her prints which I really love. As we head into a new year, I think positive reminders are a lovely thing to have around. Don't you?

Handmade Holiday.

Hey there. Merry Monday! I ran out of time to post this yesterday, but here's a little looksy at the handmade gifts I made this year...beer cozies!

The morning I snapped these quick photos, the light was shining in the room in the most artsy way, teehee.

After I made cozies for my best friends, I decided the mister and I needed one too :). Then on Christmas I brought our cozies to my Aunt's to use (and kinda show off) and now my newly 21 year-old sister wants one, my mum, and one of my cousins. Woot! Everyone was talking about how much I remind them of my late grandmother. It was truly a compliment for me, because we were very very close when she was living, and she is still my biggest idol. Granny-love ♥.

I'm starting to pack up all the holiday goodies in our house...man-o-man Christmas can be messy. We left a bunch of wrapping paper on the floor so our kitties could enjoy it, and now it's alllll over the place in itty bitty pieces, because April, the terrorist, just loves to make momma clean, hahah.

On a Butter Toast note: Jasmine, my business partner, loved the cozy I made her....I think I may start making them for the shop...I'd love to get some feedback from our shoppers..

Holiday Recap.

Happy Day after Christmas!! I really wanted to keep up on posts over the holiday, but as I'm sure most people understand...it got busy. My mister and I had a lovely holiday together...our 3rd Christmas together!! Time flies when you're in love.

On Christmas Eve I went around to some thrift shops in search of cheap retro holiday decor...and I certainly scored. I found so many great ornaments, it prompted me to put up a tree last minute to display my new/old treasures. But before our Christmas Eve tree, Brad and I had some fun making scenes with the ornaments. A few photos from our playtime:

After we played I ventured over to my hometown of Mesa...Reason #1- to visit my favorite thrift shops on the eastside, #2- to help my momma cook a little for Christmas.

Man-o-man, my very favorite thrift shop did not let me down!! Check out this load of vintage Christmas ornaments I scored!!

Since I had found such great holiday ornaments/decor all day, I grabbed my mini Christmas tree from my mum's to set up at home. When I plugged it in at home I was disappointed to remember that only a few of the pre-strung lights worked...boo. But that wasn't going to ruin my Christmas Eve! I had thrifted some red poinsettia lights that I wrapped around the top of my non-working tree...it turned out a bit hodge-podge..but I'm fully a fan of perfectly imperfect.

Although it's quite imperfect, it was so great to have a tree to look at on Christmas morning.

I'm planning on stocking up on Christmas decor today since hopefully everything will be on sale. I will post later today about my handmade holiday gifts. They ended up being a hit with my family, I have three requests to make more!!

Holiday Rush!

Hi there! Ahh, I've been a bit absent lately, haven't I?

I've been under the weather for a few days and between recuperating and hustling to finish some handmade holiday gifts, I've barely had time for the internet, or anything else for that matter. I'm not much of a plan-ahead-er, so of course this past week has felt like quite the holiday rush. But alas, I did get to finish some handmade gifts for some of my closest friends. I can't wait to share photos, but of course I don't want to post them before the big day.

As I've mentioned, this is my first festive holiday in quite some time. My cheery mood came a little late, so I didn't get to make a lot of the cute holiday projects I've come across recently...boohoo. This coming year, I'm going to work on holiday projects year round to be ultra prepared for next year's holiday season! I really want to send my mister's mother a 'Christmas in July' package full of handmade and retro holiday cheer. She is quite the lover of Christmas, and I know how much she would love more Holiday decor. These are a few more project ideas I've come across I want to make happen for next year.

When it comes to cute and kitschy home decor, Danielle Thompson, of Thompson Family Life certainly knows what shes doing. I swoon over her seasonal home displays every chance I get. I love, love, love her pretty kitschy style, I literally dream about her collection of vintage decor and craft goodies at night. I highly recommend that you go check out her blog, and read through her past posts...But beware, you might get stuck for hours gazing at the goodness. She's one crafty momma, and she has certainly become an idol for me. She gives great crafting tips and how-to's all the time. What a lady.

Sweaters, recycled.

I came across a great post on Apartment Therapy a couple days ago about recycled sweaters (found here). I really loved some of the ideas and it prompted me to look into more lovely recycled d.i.y ideas. Here are a couple of my favorite:

I picked up this really adorable house-shaped cork board while thrifting a couple weeks ago, and in my festive mood decided it would be cute to make a little Christmas scene in it. It turned into a bigger project that I expected. And in the end, I feel like a total dork for making it. But here it is, in all it's geeky glory:

It looks like a 3rd grader made it, but it was fun playing arts and crafts like a kid again.

Three ladies make up the shop Love Mae: Peta, Emily, and Rebekah. I fell madly in love with their designs after they were featured on Etsy's homepage not too long ago. They specialize in reusable fabric decals, and their designs are completely precious, whimsical, and lovely. I'm tempted to break the bank and buy up everything from LoveMaeShop! I want some for myself, and I can think of plenty of ladies who would love to receive these as a gift.

Thrifted Thursday.

Hey there. Welcome to my Holiday edition of Thrifted Thursday!! My recent festive mood must have helped me strike gold in the vintage Christmas decor department. Last time I stopped into Goodwill, there it was, retro Holiday magic....now all mine! This photo sucks so bad (mega sorry), it was a quickie on my phone, then I never had a chance to re-take nicer images before my Butter Toast duties today.

Clockwise:

1. Vintage quilted Christmas tree, complete with bows and bells!

2. A retro 3-piece plastic (lawn?) decorations...Santa in his sleigh and two Snowmen.

3. Vintage painted glass Christmas window decoration.

4. Polka dot Christmas tree salt and pepper shakers.

5. Green plaid Holiday coasters.

6. Retro '12 days of Christmas' themed pint glasses.

(They didn't have the full set, so I settled on 3 of my faves).

I know it's a little late in the season to start collecting holiday decor, but I couldn't help myself...I'm a vintage addict!!

He needs to be cleaned up a bit, but how could I resist?

He's about 3 feet tall, and I want to name him....any suggestions??
